On October 8th we celebrated my dad's
(aka: Gramps) 62nd birthday. Usually birthdays as we get older kind of get pushed to the side and aren't really celebrated like they were when we are younger. But this year I felt like it was an extra special birthday. There are too many people that we know these days
(my dad being one of them) having their young lives being changed by cancer, dementia, alzheimers, etc. It makes me look at life in general in a whole new light. Watching my dad being changed by his PPA
(primary progressive aphasia...aka: dementia) is one of the hardest things I have experienced in my life thus far, but it also reminds me that we need to make every day special...most importantly celebrating every single birthday that we can have together.
So on this day it was all about celebrating my dad and everything great about him. He may not be able to say much anymore, but we could tell that the day meant a lot to him just through his emotions. It was an emotional day for all of us
(including him), but it felt so good to make the day about my dad so he knows we are all there for him and that we love him so much!! He will always be my dad, no matter how the dementia changes him.
