Leia's 32nd Birthday in San Diego

For months Jason and I tossed back and forth the idea of what to do for a family vacation since we usually go somewhere in the spring when we are just dying for some sun.  Oddly enough this year we hardly had any rain and really enjoyed the spring weather.

Jason would have probably been content just staying home and making life as easy as possible, but I was really feeling the itch for a getaway, despite the mild winter and spring we had been having. Hawaii came up a lot, but that just seemed too hard with Hailey (especially the long flight) and not having any grandparents with us this time was a huge factor in what to do.  In the end we decided on a San Diego trip with a 2-day trip to Legoland and their super cool waterpark, the San Diego Zoo and then ending the trip with a visit to Altadena to visit Jason's brother and sister-in-law (April 16-21). Looking back it was a lot of work and it oddly enough happened to be warmer in Seattle than it was in San Diego, but we always manage to make such fun memories and never go into it with the expectation that it will be relaxing or easy (plan for the worst and get pleasantly surprised when it goes better than expected).

This trip happened to fall right on my 32nd birthday, so what better way to celebrate than to feel like a kid again and go to Legoland and the waterpark for our first full day of vacation?! Although this trip didn't go quite as planned seeing that I found out I was pregnant not long before this, so I was having a bit of morning sickness and was extremely tired!  Not sure how I was going to last 2 days at a theme park and unsure of what I could even do as far as rides went. I managed to still have fun, as long as I kept my belly full of food every few hours :)  We ended my fun birthday with a delicious dinner (and 2 very tired and slightly cranky kiddos) Mexican dinner.

Day 2 of Legoland was equally fun going on more of Cammy's favorite rides and doing some that we weren't able to do the day before.  The Legoland Aquarium was a highlight for the girls for sure!

Day 3 was not really the highlight of our trip.  Hailey had a fever and was not feeling like herself one bit.  We still headed to the San Diego Zoo and hoped for the best.  All I have to say is that the first half of the day was not too fun...having to stop to get medicine for Hailey, getting to the zoo later than planned, having to eat lunch almost right away once we arrived, and Hailey screaming crying in the stroller because she wanted to be held the whole time and it was much warmer than expected!  At this point we actually considered just leaving, but we stuck it out. The second half of the day was much better while Hailey rested.  The highlight of the day was definitely the baby animals...especially the baby hippo (I could have been left there all day)!!!!!  Once back at the hotel, we planned to go watch the sun set since it looked to be very popular the day before.  Unfortunately it got really cloudy and the sunset was nothing spectacular, but we still enjoyed the pretty color behind the clouds.

Started the zoo day with a bus tour around the zoo

Day 4 of our trip was our travel day to Jason's brother and sister-in-law's house in Altadena.  We started the day off with a little beach visit right near our hotel because Cammy really wanted to fly a kite that we brought all the way from home!  Poor Hailey was not really feeling much better, so her and I just sat in the sand and watched Jason and Cammy fly the kite.  The pure joy on Cammy's face while running down the beach with the kite made this little beach stop totally worth it!  The day ended arriving in Altadena where we spent the night with Jason's brother and sister-in-law and their dog Pearl.  It was the perfect end to a fun family trip!

So glad we remembered to take a picture of all of us together!!

As I recently read, there really is no such thing as a vacation when you have young kids.  It's called a trip.  I find this to be so true.  But no matter a relaxing vacation or a stressful trip, we always enjoy making these memories together.  And what makes it all worth it is that the kids only remember the good parts.  Cammy still to this day (over 3 months later) plays "vacation to San Diego" on a regular basis and regularly asks me when we can go back there.  If that doesn't make the whole trip worth it, I don't know what does!
